Episode 3: Rio de Janeiro

1.      Introduction: Hello everyone. Welcome to our podcast about vacation spots. My name is Caitlin and my name is Kimmie. Our two vacation spots today are in (location of vacation spots). The first vacation spot is (vacation spot 1) and the second vacation spot is(vacation spot 2).

3.      Review vacation spot 1- Tijuka National Park
o   Tijuka National Park is located in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. It is a rainforest that covers 8,300 acres of land and is the largest man made rainforest in the world. In 1861 Dom Pedro II noticed that deforestation was a major issue in Rio de Janeiro. To put an end to this issue, he hired people to replant Tijuca to replenish the water supply. The park was opened in 1961.
4.      Fun facts about vacation spot 1
o   The wildlife in the park consists of insects, howler monkeys, birds and ocelots.  
o   There are many endangered species in Tijuca National Park, such as flora, fauna, different types of insects, spiders, snakes, hummingbirds, coatis, capuchin monkeys, armadillos, and much more.
o   About 1.5 million people visit Tijuca National Park every year.
o   There are over 200 trails which lead to waterfalls, caves and viewing platforms.
o   Atop Corcovado Hill, is a peak in the park that the Christ the Redeemer statue is located on. It is one of Rio de Janeiro’s best known landmarks.
5.      Review vacation spot 2
o   Sugarloaf Mountain is a mountain located in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil that is 396 meters high and provides a bird’s eye view of Rio de Janeiro from the mouth of Guanabara Bay. From the top of this mountain, you have a breathtaking view of surrounding beaches, mountains, and forests. From 8am to 9pm you have the option to take a cable car up the mountain. The best time to do this is around sunset. The first stop while taking the cable car up the mountain is Urca Mountain. During this trip, you will have an aerial view of Copacabana, the Christ Statue, Niteroi Bridge, and Guanabara Bay. At this stop, there are restaurants, gift shops, and a small theater with informational videos. The second cable car takes you from Urca to the very top of the Mountain. Once you get to the top, you have a 360 degree view of the region.
6.      Fun facts about vacation spot 2
o   It is one of the largest and most popular urban rock climbing destinations in the world with around 270 different routes to climb.
o   Sugarloaf Mountain is known as a monolith, which means it’s one big block. This is because it contains very little vegetation on its slopes and is made of really hard igneous rock.
o   It is named after its unique shape that looks like a traditional form of refined sugar used in the 19th Century.
o   It reaches up to 1,229 feet
o   It overlooks Rio de Janeiro

7.      Popular restaurants/food Rio de Janeiro
o   Pao de Queijo- cheesy bread
o   Acai- Bitter palm berries that are sweetened.
o   Pipoca- Popcorn that is either salty or sweet and comes with cheese or bacon.
o   Pastel- Dough with cheese meat or shrimp folded into it.
o   Kibe- has a dark and crusty whole wheat outside layer and with spicy ground beef inside.

3.      Review vacation spot 1- Taronga Zoo
·         The Taronga Zoo is a fun place to visit when in Sydney, Australia. At this zoo there are daily presentations, animal encounters, guided tours, overnight stays, free flight bird show, and 340 different species of animals to observe.  Visiting this zoo is a great way to see the animals that Australia is known for such as Koalas and Kangaroos.
4.      Fun facts about vacation spot 1
·         The Taronga Zoo is home to 2,600 animals from 340 species
·         It’s “star animal” is its elephant herd. It has a herd of 8 elephants.
·         Taronga was named for the aboriginal word for ‘beautiful view.’ It has a view of Sydney’s harbor.
·         The zoo first opened to the Public on October 7th, 1916.
5.      Review vacation spot 2- Manly Beach
·         Manly Beach is a popular seaside destination in Sydney, Australia. It is surrounded on three sides by the Pacific Ocean and the Sydney Harbor. It has more than 30 attractions and activities, over 100 restaurants and cafes, and it has more than 200 boutiques and specialty shops. A popular and common activity for those to do visiting Manly Beach is the Manly Ferry. Some popular annual events that happen at Manly Beach are the Manly Food and Wine Festival, Manly Jazz Festival, and Manly Surf Life Saving Carnival.
6.      Fun facts about vacation spot 2
·         Manly is a home to one of the last colonies of little penguins in Australia. Some of these little penguins live under the Manly Wharf and occasionally can be seen swimming around Manly Cove.  
·         There are seahorse colonies in Manly. The Seahorse communities are built on the nets that line the swimming pool.
·         Manly is the birthplace of Australian surfing and is one of the world’s five surfing reserves.
·         In one year, the Manly Ferry travels the same distance as travelling around the world two times.
·         Manly has 7 million people visit each year. 25% of these visitors come only for surfing.
7.      Popular restaurants/food  in Sydney, Australia
·         Zali’s Restaurant is a delicious restaurant located in Novotel Sydney Manly Pacific hotel. It serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner and overlooks the beach.
·         The Q Station is a restaurant that serves modern Australian Cuisine. At this restaurant you can dine on the edge of Sydney’s harbor.
·         Another popular restaurant is Quay. Quay has floor to ceiling windows that has a beautiful view of the Sydney Harbor. It is one of Australia’s most awarded Restaurants. It’s also one of two Australian Restaurants on the World’s top 50 list.

3.      Review vacation spot 1- Eiffel Tower
o   The Eiffel Tower is a major and historical landmark located in Champ de Mars in Paris, France. It was built in 1889 when France hosted a World’s Fair for the 100 year anniversary of the French Revolution. It took hundreds of workers around two years to assemble the framework of the tower. They had to put together over 18,000 pieces of puddle iron and 2.5 million rivets. It stood 10,000 feet tall and at this time it was the tallest structure in the world. Eventually they were able to add 2 more levels on to the Eiffel Tower. Now, the Eiffel Tower is one of the most recognizable structures on the planet, and has about 500 employees working their everyday.
4.      Fun facts about vacation spot 1
o   In 1909, it was almost torn down, but it became very valuable during WWI. It was able to intercept enemy radio waves, relayed zeppelin alerts and was used to communicate with emergency troops.
o   It was named after Gustave Eiffel
o   It weighs about 10000 tonnes
o   Every 7 years, 50 tonnes of paint is painted on the Eiffel tower, so it does not rust.
o   Since its opening, it has had more than 250 million visitors climb it.
5.      Review vacation spot 2- Louvre Museum
o   The Louvre museum is one of the finest art galleries in the world, located in Paris, France. It was built in 1910 as a fortress to protect the people of France against raids from Phillipe-Auguste. In the 16th century it was reconstructed to be a royal palace.  
6.      Fun facts about vacation spot 2
o   It is the largest and most well-known museum in the world.
o   It became a fine art museum in 1793 and held only 537 paintings.
o   It holds over 380,000 sculptures, paintings, jewelries and other types of artwork. 
o   In 1911, the Mona Lisa was stolen from the Louvre.
o   Napoleon renamed it Musee Napoleon and increased the Louvres collection of artwork.
7.      Popular restaurants/food  in Paris
o   Pain au Chocolat- it is a croissant filled with rich chocolate in the middle
o   Croque Monsieur- a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with an egg on top.
o   Crepes- a buckwheat galette that typically has ham and cheese or Nutella and fruit in the middle
o   Brandade de Morue- Mashed salt cod blended with olive oil and garlic 
o   Macaroon-  a colored cookie sandwich typically with coconut on it.
